Chances are, if your car is a genuine Mercedes, it’s got a diesel engine. Mercedes diesel cars are classic, sexy, and durable — so long as you understand how to properly look after them. To keep your Mercedes parts in the best possible condition, the first thing you should do is find and read your owner’s manual for all of the recommended factory tune-ups. Then, stick to that provided schedule.

In the meantime, however, here are some personal, at-home TLC tips for caring for Mercedes diesel cars of any make or model.

  • Check Your Levels
You should be monitoring oil, coolant, and washer fluid levels every week, and check power steering, brake, and transmission fluids monthly. If you add or change out anything, be very careful to only use the fluids recommended in the owner’s manual for your particular Mercedes — especially when it comes to brakes, transmission, and steering.
  • Switch Your Oils
This may sound contradictory to the previous point, but many owners of Mercedes diesel cars opt to switch to synthetic oils, if they’re not already installed in the vehicle. If you do, you should still follow routine oil change procedures — around every 7,500 miles of six months. However, some diesel engines require more frequent oil changes. If you stick with regular oil, have it changed about every 5,000 miles.
  • Keep it Clean
It’s amazing what just a little bit of regular care can do to maintain the gloss and shine of vintage Mercedes parts. It should go without saying that to protect your car from rust and wear, have it cleaned and detailed on the regular to help it look and run its best for many quality years to come.

It’s a great feeling, belonging to the Mercedes owners club. But it’s not a one-time deal. Maintenance and care is a year-round job, especially for vintage models.

Do what you can to maintain your vehicle and keep it in good condition, and you’ll be doing the entire brand and all of its many fans a great service, too. Caring for your Mercedes will help your vehicle run better, and it’ll help you look better when you drive it, too.
