Cars make life easier — you don’t have to rely on friends or family members to help you get from one place to another, and you can just pick up and go somewhere whenever you feel like it. So if your car is starting fail you, you may want to think about getting a new one quickly.

This doesn’t necessary mean that you have to look into ,new car sales if you feel they are too expensive. Used car dealers get plenty of customers every year, and last year alone, used car sales topped 40 million.

You probably already know what to look for when buying a used car — your budget, a good deal, more bang for your buck, etc. But here are few tips on mistakes you will want to avoid when you go used car shopping.

  • Quick Buy. Even if you are in a rush to get a new car because your current one is sputtering, it is imperative not to speed through the process. Take the time to do the right research, talk to used car dealers and compare prices at different dealerships. When you make a purchase without being thorough, you are more likely to overlook important details about the history of the car.
  • Limiting Your Search. Your town or suburb is a great place to start looking for a car, but it should not be the end of your search. You will want to expand your search to other areas of town, or even different cities. You can also go online to various used car sites. You may also be able to strike a better deal with an owner looking to sell his or her vehicle independently through sites like Craigslist.
  • Not Having It Inspected. It would be ideal to bring a good auto mechanic, or one that you trust, to check the car you want, drive it, and give you his or her evaluation. The dealer can tell you what they want about the car, but don’t buy it until you know it gets your mechanic’s seal of approval.

So, instead of focusing on what to look for when buying a used car, you may want to consider what to avoid. It could save you a lot of hassle, and a good chunk of money.
