Did you know that 200 million gallons of used motor oil are incorrectly disposed of in the United States each year? However, drivers in the U.S. produce approximately 1.3 billion gallons of used motor oil every year because all combustion engines need oil in order to run properly. Fortunately, following the convenient invention of plastic motor oil bottles in the 1980s, drivers are now able to buy motor oil online. Before purchasing oil, however, you must determine which motor oils are right for your car.

- SAE gradings. The Society of Automotive Engineers grades oils based on their viscosity characteristics. The viscosity is given a numeric value, and these numbers are suffixed with the letter W. A second numeric value can also be added to the grading, and this number represents the temperature range in which the oil will function properly. For example, 10W-30, 10W-20, and 5W-30 are all common SAE grades. Since many car manuals suggest oils based on their viscosity grades, it is possible to find the right oil for your vehicle based on SAE standards.

- API ratings. The American Petroleum Institute, unlike the SAE, rates oils based on their overall quality. These ratings are determined by studying a variety of factors, such as how well the oil performs in different engines, as well as the lasting effects of the oil on motors. API oil ratings are designed to be incredibly strict so that only the best motor oils end up in your car. Since you can buy motor oil online based on its API ratings, this is a convenient way to obtain the best oil for your vehicle.

Although all combustion engines need oil, not all motor oils are the same. Fortunately, the SAE and API both have their own sets of standards for grading and rating oils. By determining which oil to choose based on its SAE and API ratings, you will be able to obtain the right oil for your vehicle. Good refereneces.
